Not all fights have to be won through violence alone. Alternatively, the monster can be chased off, or even tamed. Non combat actions can also be used to gain in character knowledge to make combat easier, or to learn pieces about the monsters you fight.
Learning Info
During combat, you may instead use your action to do an ACA or LORE skill check to identify a monster's strengths and weaknesses. This can give your characters IC knowledge as to why they might be struggling in a fight, or how to end the fight more quickly.
Scaring Away
A fight doesn't have to end in death. Many monsters won't continue the fight if they're certain they're going to lose. Intimidation is more effective when monsters are injured, or when their allies have been slain. To intimidate a monster, rp your actions, then roll a LORE skill check to see how effective they were.
Taming
Some monsters can become a lifelong companion. Note, however, that if a monster looks particularly humanoid it is not tameable. To tame a monster, rp how your character interacts with them, then roll a LORE check to see how effective your actions were. In some cases a lore check won't help much if your actions are something the monster doesn't like at all.
Some rp actions can make LORE checks easier to attain. In most cases, the basic LORE check needed to tame a small monster is 2 during (sometimes during multiple rounds), and the basic LORE check needed to tame a large monster is 4 (sometimes during multiple rounds.). You are only able to tame as many monsters during combat as you have lore points. Otherwise the creatures are simply pacified. Monsters tamed outside of combat don't count.
